Nelson's Best Pizza Contest: No skimping at the Hume

The Hume Hotel started making pizza 18 years ago, and never looked back.

“Sometimes our food evolves over time, but when we started doing pizza it was such a winning formula and instant success that we haven’t changed it much since 1995,” explained Hume general manager Ryan Martin.

Originally the pizza kitchen was part of the hotel’s downstairs nightclub Taffy Jacks, and people would pop into the club just for a slice of pie.

“The pizza used to bring a lot of people downstairs that otherwise wouldn’t come down to party,” Martin recalled.

When Taffy Jacks was replaced with Spiritbar in 2007, the pizza ovens were moved into the main hotel and late night favourite became available at all hours of the day.

Today you can order pizza at any of the Hume’s restaurants from 11 a.m. until late night, or get it by the slice at Mike’s Place Pub and Spiritbar on weekends. It’s also available through the “Hume 2 Go” delivery service.

“A lot of people forget we have awesome pizza that can be delivered right to your door,” Martin said, “and if you want a six-pack of beverages, we can throw that in too with the delivery.”

One of the most popular pizzas at the Hume is the “’55 Vette w/ BC Plates,” a serious meat lovers named for Martin’s dad’s old Corvette, which he donated to the CT Scanner fundraising campaign in 2010. The “Heritage Classic” pizza, with pepperoni, mushrooms and green peppers, is also a favourite.

All Hume Hotel pizzas come on dough made fresh and proofed in house, with the option of thick crust or thin. Gluten free crust is also available. The cheese is a real blend of mozzarella and edam. All the ingredients are top quality.

“We don’t skimp on anything,” Martin said. “There’s always lots of cheese and lots of toppings.”

The Hume Hotel is one of six participants in the Nelson’s Best Pizza contest, on now until September 6.
