Get fit, make money.
That’s the appeal of delivering the Star for Joe Woodward, a Nelson resident who personally hikes all over town to deliver hundreds of issues every week. He’s one of the stalwarts amidst a shortage, so now he’s encouraging other residents to give it a try.
“I basically get paid for exercising; what a concept!” Woodward told the Star.
“I also get outside, away from a desk or computer, and take in the awesome views and sounds of nature in Nelson. In some places it’s actually pretty quiet.”
During his rounds he gets to “practice a little bit of map-reading skills and learn the neighbourhoods and streets and understand their different vibes. I’m able to exchange occasional greetings with residents.”
Newer to the profession is Shelley Anderson, who has only been lugging around the Star for a few months. She enjoys the fresh air and the chance to meet her neighbours.
“Nelson is so full of beauty any time of the year. Recently, delivering in the evening, with the full moon rising over the mountainand shining on the trees up there and the snow down here, in the icy cold, has been incomparably beautiful.”
She figures if she stayed indoors “I would’ve missed out on all that beauty.”
