Reach a Reader day arrives in Nelson
Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy are collecting donations for the third annual Reach a Reader. By making a donation to this campaign through buying the Nelson Star today, you are supporting literacy programs in your community. Thank you for making the difference.
The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy is the Columbia Basin and Boundary region not-for-profit literacy organization. Its programs support seniors, adults, families, youth and children of all ages improve English, reading, writing, numeracy, computer and workplace skills.
Family literacy programs aim to provide parents and caregivers with the skills needed to support their children’s literacy development. There are a number of program opportunities in your community.
In Nelson, enjoy Love 2 Learn for parents and three to five year olds hosted at local schools. In Balfour, come to Parent and Child Time for zero to five year olds and their parents offered at the Harrop hall.
In the Slocan Valley join families for Mother Goose, a circle time of songs and stories at the Brent Kennedy Learning Centre. Join us in Ymir and Salmo for Rhythm and Rhyme for zero to five year olds and their parents.
As well, the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy offers a number of adult literacy programs that provide adult learners with the tools and skills needed to be successful in the modern world. In Nelson, English language classes happen at the Learning Place in City Hall on Mondays and Thursdays.
In Kaslo, One to One tutoring for adults is available to help with basic computer skills, ESL, money skills, reading and writing.
In the Slocan Valley, computer classes and workshops happen throughout the year to support fundamental computer and internet skills.
In Salmo, Wednesdays between 11 a.m to 2 p.m. adults can get help with basic computers, reading and writing, math, English language, test preparation, filling out forms and skills upgrading. Find a program that is right for you!
