Construction of the Friendship Gate at the footbridge in Cottonwood Falls Park got underway on Tuesday, with workers from Spearhead Timberworks assembling the Japanese style structure. The gate is a project of the Nelson Izu-shi Friendship Society which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Nelson’s sister city relationship with Izu-shi, Japan. A delegation from Isu-shi will be in Nelson for the official opening of the gate on August 7. The construction was overseen by the society’s Bernie Zimmer and Jim Sawada (pictured).
