It’s better together.

That’s the message former Nelson fire chief Simon Grypma wants to share with the community as he prepares for the upcoming Alzheimer’s Walk on Sunday.

Too often people diagnosed with the disease end up isolated and lonely, and the money raised during the event will go towards making sure that doesn’t happen.

The funds stay in the West Kootenay community and go towards providing support programs, education and services.

The funds will also contribute towards awareness activities and research into the causes of Alzheimer’s and potential cures.

Last year the event raised $18,000 and this year they’re hoping to hit $20,000.

You can walk as a team or as an individual, with registration starting at 11 a.m. at Lakeside Park.

The walk will take place from noon until 1 p.m.

In the meantime, there will be a silent auction for a painting by local artist Carol Reynolds. It’s currently on display at the the office of one of their primary sponsors, Nelson Investors Group.

“This year’s walk honours all caregivers. We are all in this together,” said Emily Tucker.

“This is not only about the individuals living with the disease, but it is about the support network that we can help foster in our community for families and friends that are impacted by the disease.”
