Kootenaians recognized with royal honour
Ten West Kootenay residents received Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals from MP Alex Atamanenko at a ceremony Friday at the Hume Hotel in Nelson.
The recipients were Hans Cunningham (Ymir), Corky Evans (Appledale), Aya Higashi (Kaslo), Donna Macdonald (Nelson), Bev Maloff (Castlegar), Dr. Rebecca McDonnell (Castlegar), Josh Smienk (Balfour), John Voykin (Pass Creek), Gary Wright (New Denver), and Geoff Yule (Castlegar).
They were nominated by the Regional District of Central Kootenay and join about two dozen other locals who have been named to receive the honour (see complete list below). The medals commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and honour outstanding community service.
Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall will award four more medals Sunday to Joan Reichardt (Nelson), Dorothy Hearn (Salmo), Shannon Nickish (Sirdar), and Bruce Walker (Kaslo).
