Downpour skews June weather stats

Our total rainfall last month would have been normal but for a downpour on the 7th.

Our total rainfall last month would have been normal but for a downpour on the 7th.

Southeast Fire Centre weather forecaster Ron Lakeman says a passing thundershower dropped 23 mm, a new daily rainfall record.

“If it hadn’t been for this one rain event, June would have been very close (within two per cent) to its monthly average of 65.7 mm,” Lakeman says.

Despite being a wetter than normal month, the average temperature was within a degree of normal. The high of 29.1 on the 5th didn’t break any records, and Lakeman says it was “a far cry from the record high of 37.9 set in 2008.”

Precipitation was measured on 18 days, almost a third more than normal. Thundershowers were also observed on eight days, two more than usual.
