Here’s another reason not to camp at Red Sands.

The Kootenay Lake nude beach located near Bealby Point doesn’t allow campers, and some scofflaws learned the potential consequences the hard way when a bear shredded their tent and destroyed their belongings.

“At approximately 9:13 p.m. the Nelson Police Department received a call for service for a possible party at Red Sands,” wrote the NPD in a press release.

“Upon police arrival, police located two people carrying camping equipment off the beach. The pair advised police that they had set up a tent earlier in the evening and when they had returned to their tent they had noticed that it had been shredded.”

The couple noticed a bear nearby and quickly left the area. By the time police arrived it was gone.

The police are reminding the public that there is no camping allowed in Nelson city limits except for at the campground.

“In addition, the NDP would like to remind the public that this is the time for bears to be looking for food and to ensure that garbage, compost and waste products are disposed of in a secure manner to avoid any possible confrontations with wildlife.”

If you see a bear, contact the NPD at (250) 354-3919 or call the RAPP Hotline at 1-877-952-7277 or online at rapp.bc.ca.
