After calling for tips from the public last week to help find two drivers allegedly involved in “suspicious incidents,” Trail police have identified one of the men in-question.

“We did identify the owner of the van outside the Glenmerry school and are still following up on the investigation,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich told the Trail Times early Monday. “We have not yet identified the man who sniffed the woman’s hair.”

Wicentowich was referring to a complaint last Monday (Jan. 23) about a man driving a dark blue van bearing an Alberta licence plate, reported to have slowly followed behind two elementary school-aged girls on Highway Drive in Glenmerry.

This is the driver that has been identified by police.

Regarding the still unknown “hair sniffer,” this call also came into the Trail detachment last Monday afternoon, though police said they didn’t suspect the two incidents were related.

This driver is reported to have been driving a blue/black older model truck along Nelson Avenue, in West Trail.

After parking his truck on the road, he allegedly approached a Trail mother and her two young children.

“He allegedly smelled the woman’s hair and asked her if she had a husband,” Wicentowich said. “The man then attempted to engage her son in a conversation by asking him where he lived and if he liked gifts.”

The mom reported that she noticed the interior of the truck contained children’s toys and books, and the truck bed contained several garbage bags.

Police say the interaction ended without further incident.

The RCMP patrolled the city but were unable to locate the man and his truck.

The vehicle is described as a black or blue older model Ford Ranger or Chevrolet S10.

The man is described as 36 to 45 years old, scruffy looking, with dark, short, shaggy spiked hair and dark coloured eyes.

If you should spot this vehicle, contact the Trail detachment at 250.364.2566 to speak to an investigator.
