The heavy smoke in the Nelson area in the past few days is from fires in the U.S., according to a report from the Southeast Fire Centre in Castlegar late on Tuesday morning.

There are no new fires or expanding fires in our area.

The Harrop fire is 100 per cent contained on the north side and on the south side is being monitored once a day by helicopter.

The fire covers 2,532 hectares. Smoke from the fire is being created largely by pockets burning within the contained area of the fire.

The Harrop Mainline and East Harrop Mainline Forest Service Roads are still closed to the public.

The Morley fire, formerly known as the Kokanee Creek fire, is in the same situation: no firefighters but daily monitoring and 100 per cent contained. The fire covers 80 hectares.

The McCormick Creek fire near the Nelway border crossing is 100 per cent contained with 22 firefighters, two pieces of heavy equipment and one helicopter. The fire covers 410 hectares. The evacuation order and alert have both been lifted. The restriction affecting the confluence of the Pend D’Oreille River north of the junction of Highway 3 and Highway 6 has been rescinded.

The Galena fire stands at 445 hectares and is 60 per cent contained with 10 firefighters and two helicopters, with no significant growth in the past few days.

Crews are patrolling this fire and continuing with mop up. An evacuation alert issued earlier this month has been lifted.

The Rapid Creek fire north of Kaslo is a modified response fire, meaning that B.C. Wildfire Services is letting it burn and monitoring it. It covers 750 hectares mostly at high elevations, but an evacuation alert is still in place for the Poplar Creek area.

UPDATE: After this story was written a fire was reported at Coffee Creek on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, the Southeast Fire Centre told the Star that fire has been extinguished.
