1935 - 2016

Claire passed away at the Kootenay Lake hospital on March 21st surrounded by her family.

She was well known in Lakeside park for her years driving the streetcar in Nelson and more

recently for her grey scooter that she used to feed the birds and give treats to the passing dogs.

Claire will be remembered by her family and friends as someone who was kind, funny,

independent and loyal. Over the years she ‘adopted’ hundreds of extra kids as she had this

uncanny ability to make everyone feel at home. Her accepting and eclectic nature made for an

interesting life full of artists, musicians and writers.

She was an accomplished piano player, a painter and a lover of nature and animals. She was a

political person who loved Canada and who always stood up for equality, justice and freedom.

She’ll be missed by a great many people, and we’re sure she’ll make a formidable, if not tiny

guardian angel for us all.

Claire is predeceased by her husband George Hayes and her son Bruce Hayes. She is

survived by her son Bill Hayes, and her three daughters, Leanne Hayes, Shonna Hayes and

Tina Hayes. She has 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
