After a hopeful and focused 3 year effort to heal a pancreatic cancer, Herb passed away at home with Carroll in the early morning of October 27, 2010. We hope he was hitting a great golf

shot in his dreams! Herb was predeceased by his parents David and Alvine; and by his two sisters Margaret and Laura. Herb is survived by his wife Carroll; his children Michelle (George), Renee and David (Suzanne); his grandson Eli; his sister Sue Dale in Abbotsford;

his nephew David Campion in Victoria; and

Carroll’s sister-in-law Laura Coventry in Nelson.

Herb grew up on his family farm in the Rosemont area of Nelson, BC as the only boy among three sisters.

His German immigrant parents’ values and daily farm chores contributed to a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence that was to serve him well in his life. He focused early in life on two loves - music and golf.

As a young boy, he earned money hunting golf balls and later caddying.

He played many instruments, but is best remembered for his touch on the piano and his accompaniment of his (soon to be) wife Carroll, and other singers. Herb and Carroll were married in 1957 and moved to Chetwynd, BC where Herb had a job as principal of the 2 room school.

They later moved back to Nelson for several years and then settled their

young family finally in Vernon in 1966. Herb taught elementary, high school and college through his teaching career in Vernon, including several years as an associate of Simon Frazer University Professional Development (teacher training) program. He retired early to pursue his love of golf, and became the first Canadian to be accepted into the

Maltby Clubmaker training school. He started Gemini Golf and for over 30 years got great joy out of helping golfers hit a better shot. Herb and Carroll recently moved back to Nelson where they had just finished renovating a house on their lake property. In addition to working tirelessly to improve his skills at whatever he was doing, Herb was quick to laugh and enjoyed a good story or joke. He was an avid reader and was always learning some new fact that he loved to share with anyone who was interested. Herb was very thankful for all the excellent medical

people he met both in Vernon and Nelson. A Celebration of Life will be held at Vernon Christian Fellowship (4506 29 Street, Vernon BC) on Friday November 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Rick Corak officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospital Foundation in Vernon or Nelson. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via email: vernon@pafs.net.
