Mable Alice Donaldson (nee Mcdowell)

April 1, 2010

MABLE ALICE DONALDSON (nee McDowell) passed away after a brief illness in Kootenay Lake District Hospital, surrounded by her family. Mable was born in Barrhead Alberta March 16th, 1933. She grew up on the family farm, and attended school in Delburne Alberta. Mable left Delburne in 1954, and moved to Nelson, and worked at the Nelson Clinic. In 1955 Mable met, and married Stan Donaldson. They were fortunate to celebrate their 55th Wedding Anniversary on March 31st, 2010. Mable and Stan had four children, Lynne (James) Burch, Kelly (deceased), Dale (Michelle) Donaldson, and Rick (Shari) Donaldson. Mable was blessed with seven grandchildren, Kelly (Angie) Burch, David (Veronica) Burch, Kristen Donaldson, Alexander Donaldson, Casey Donaldson, Kaitlyn Donaldson, and Courtney Donaldson. Mable also had five great grand Children, Briana Burch, Raya Burch, Mya Burch, Aiden Burch, and Leia Burch. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Mable was fortunate to have a great seventy-seven years, and although it seems too short, she said "you can't complain about what you didn't have". She was able to say goodbye to her family, and numerous friends, one day seeing over a hundred visitors, as they streamed in to say their farewells. Rev. David Boyd and Skype provided her final church service and she treasured that time to say goodbye to her "family" at Nelson United Church. Mable was a long time Nelson volunteer with Meals On Wheels, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, and many groups within the United Church. Mable and Stan continued to square dance for over fifty years and developed several lifelong friends along the way. Those that knew Mable will attest to her indelible spirit, kindness, loyalty, compassion, and love for all those she met. Mable enjoyed travel in her retirement, and was able to visit several places throughout the world. It was her family, friends, and strong spiritual beliefs that provided her with the greatest joy of her life and until the end provided the comfort she needed. The Family appreciates the outpouring of support and kind words throughout Mable's illness from the community she loved. Mable was predeceased by her parents Dorothy and James McDowell, sisters Lois McDowell, Delores Robertson, Shirley Hamilton, and son Kelly Donaldson. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made, in Mable's memory, to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation.
