September 23, 2016

Sept 30, 1928 - Sept 23, 2016

“Richard” passed away peacefully on Sept 23, 2016 at Mountain Lakes Seniors Home in Nelson with family at his side. Rich was born in Nelson on Sept 30, 1928 and lived his entire life in his beloved Nelson. He obtained a Law degree at UBC and practiced Law in Nelson at Hamilton, Brown, Nasmyth and Co. Rich also was a teacher in Nelson at the Junior High School. Rich was an artist, an avid historian and an iconic storyteller. He spent many hours researching at the local museum and was so great at sharing his knowledge with anyone. His family were some of the original settlers in Nelson and his father William was the Police Magistrate from 1921 until the mid 1950’s. The Brown family was featured in Art Joyce’s book “The Perfect Childhood”. Rich was very proud of his substantial contributions to this book. Rich was thoughtful, generous and was always ready to help someone in need. He had a great love for the family cottage at 9 mile and spent as much time there as he could. He is fondly remembered by his family as “Uncle Rich”.

He is survived by nephews, Ian (Sherie), Neil, (Coleen), Garry (Diana), Jim, Joe, and niece Sandra (Harold) and many very special great nieces and great nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, William 1955 and Nell 1986, sisters Betty 1962 and Barbara 1997, and nephew Brian 2010.

The Funeral for Richard will be held on Saturday October 15th, 2016 at Thompson Funeral Service at 11:00am. All are welcome. Donations in his name may be made to the Nelson Museum. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Mountain Lakes for their years of caring!
