LETTER: Kootenay Lake waterfront document misunderstood

“The Kootenay Lake Partnership was not established to represent all sectors.”

Re: “Shoreline homeowners decry waterfront plan” (August 11)

A number of points need to be clarified.

1. The Kootenay Lake Partnership was not established to represent all sectors. It is solely a government-to-government partnership that brings together agencies to address overlapping jurisdictional responsibilities in an effort to reduce redundancy. The Kootenay Lake Waterfront Property Owners Association was not intentionally excluded from the Partnership, rather the Partnership is not structured to include non-government membership.

2. The Shoreline Guidance Document is not introducing new regulations or changing existing regulations. It is consolidating existing regulations in an effort to streamline the regulatory process, and is a tool to help residents and developers navigate complex local, provincial and federal regulations.

3. The Shoreline Guidance Document is not introducing new fees for shoreline development activities, whether it is for dock applications or First Nations consultation. First Nations consultation remains the responsibility of the Crown.

A number of these concerns were raised and addressed prior to the start of the open houses.
