LETTER: Shocked at woman’s insensitive comment

Last Saturday at our community yard sale, a woman came up to me to ask how much something was. I told her “a buck” at which point she handed me a dime, laughing, and said “I’m Jewing you down”.

I was so stunned at her ignorance and could say nothing, therefore the comment went unchecked. I will forever regret not acknowledging what she said, and I wish I had told her to leave. So here I am.

How did she not know that I, or my husband, or anyone in the vicinity, wasn’t Jewish? Thankfully, my neighbour, who in fact is Jewish, was not within earshot. I just want that woman, and anyone else who still subscribes to such blatant ignorance, to know that is totally unacceptable, inappropriate, and hurtful. Please be mindful of the words you speak.
