Nelson Atoms claim West Kootenay title
The Nelson Atom B team capped off an impressive season last weekend capturing the West Kootenay Atom B championship.
The team entered the Atom B playoffs, hosted by Grand Forks and Midway, and went undefeated in five games, topping Boundary on their home ice in a thrilling final 6-5. The sixth goal, scored by Kai Simmonds and assisted by Matteo Faraguna and Rhett Hamilton, was scored with only 29 seconds remaining in the game.
The team was almost flawless during its league play, going undefeated and marking a 15-0-1 record making them top in the Atom B league standings.
The team was led by standout goaltender Creigh Bjarnason and sniper Simmonds. Offensive contributions from Hamilton, Faraguna, Bryce Sookro, Jack Barclay, Seamus Boyd and Drake Proctor also helped solidify wins. Despite their offensive prowess, the team was well stacked with defenders that were relentless in their duties including Ethan Bennett, Pax Arrowsmith, Andy Loutit, Matteo Mushumanski, and Noah Ens. Supporting cast of Ben Thast, Devan Andrusak, Koby Upper, Shelby Vulcano, Jack Centrone, and Jackson Cousins were also instrumental in the team’s success.
