The Nelson Baseball Association has asked the city to play extra innings at Lion’s Park.

The association submitted a proposal to city council on April 24 that would increase the amount of baseball played at the park from 100 hours per season to 200 between April and June.

The current memorandum of understanding signed between the city and Nelson Baseball in November 2011 also limits games at Lion’s Park to players 10 years old and younger. The organization uses Queen Elizabeth Park for its older players, and its presentation included a request to host no more than two weekend tournaments at Lion’s for players 12 and under.

Finally, Nelson Baseball asked the city to take over maintenance of the park.

Local baseball players won the West Kootenay Little League majors division championship last year for the first time in the tournament’s decade-long existence. Nelson is scheduled to host the championship this summer.

The presentation was made during a committee of the whole meeting in which council hears from groups but recommendations are deferred to city staff.
