The Nelson Leafs gave up three consecutive short-handed goals in the first period Tuesday en route to a 7-4 road loss against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

Beaver Valley’s Nathan Dominici, Ollie Clement and Gavin Tritt each scored shorthanded, with Clement and Tritt’s goals separated by just 22 seconds.

Dominici finished the game with a hat trick, while Boris Hristov and Jake Maniago also scored for the Nitehawks (20-13-3). Goaltender Connor Stojan meanwhile made 38 saves.

Ryan Quast, Bennett Anklewich, Seamus Boyd and Crae Dawson replied for the Leafs (19-14-5). Frederick Larochelle started in Nelson’s net but was pulled after allowing five goals on 17 shots. Jasper Tait gave up one more goal in relief and made 26 saves.

Both teams are tied on points for second place in the Neil Murdoch Division, although the Nitehawks hold the tiebreaker with one extra win.

Nelson begins a three-game homestand Friday against the Golden Rockets followed by a game Saturday against the Columbia Valley Rockies. Nelson then hosts the Grand Forks Border Bruins on Jan. 31.

The Leafs have six games remaining in the regular season and have already earned a playoff berth.
