This month two Nelson restaurants are participating in Restaurants for Change, a national event happening at 75 restaurants in 18 cities across the country.
On Oct. 17, Yum Son and the Library Lounge at the Hume Hotel will contribute the proceeds of all of the evening’s food sales, half to the Nelson Food Cupboard and half to Community Food Centres Canada.
“All communities grapple with food security issues,” says Library Lounge owner Ryan Martin, “and it is important to do what we can to help out. We are in an industry where people are spending money on a nice night out and we definitely realize that not everyone can afford that.”
Brad Filleul, the owner of Yum Son, agrees.
“Feeding the people is what we do,” he says, “so it’s nice to give a little of that to everybody.”
There will be no special menu at the Library or Yum Son on the night of the event. This is Restaurants for Change’s fifth year across the country but its first in Nelson.
The Food Cupboard’s Andrew Creighton says his organization is expanding to become a Community Food Centre. There are ten in the country at the moment with more to come, he says. The centres include programs for growing, cooking, sharing, and advocating for good food.
Meals at the two restaurants on Oct. 17 will run from 5 to 11 p.m.
