Ushering in 2025, Selkirk Pro-Musica presents an unforgettable evening of dynamic chamber music. The Storm Mountain Trio, comprised of Kootenay musicians Jeff Faragher, Martine denBok and Sue Gould, will perform a captivating program that journeys through various musical landscapes on Jan. 16.

The first half of the evening promises excitement and charm from the sultry tango rhythms of Astor Piazzolla's Winter from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires to the spirited Cuban flair of Paquito D'Rivera's Danzón. Revel in the intimate dialogue of Reinhold Glière's Eight Pieces for Violin and Cello, the haunting serenity of Pavel Karmanov's Second Snow on the Stadium, and the rich Spanish folk colours of Manuel de Falla's Suite Populaire Espagnole. The first half will conclude with the poignant American spiritual Wayfaring Stranger, arranged by Donnellan Hagen.

The Trio will then perform Antonín Dvořák's masterful Piano Trio No. 4 in E Minor, known as the Dumky Trio. This deeply emotional and vibrant work, which weaves between melancholy introspection and lively dances, is a testament to the trio's virtuosity and expressive power. The concert's second half promises to be a captivating journey through a range of emotions.

The Storm Mountain Trio features three distinguished musicians whose geographic roots — Nelson, Golden, and New Denver, BC— inspired the ensemble's name, reflecting the rugged beauty of the landscapes they call home. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and passion to the stage.

Pianist Sue Gould has been performing, teaching, and arranging music for decades, from coaching opera at the Banff School of Fine Arts to playing for the G8 summit. Based in Golden, she is well-versed as both a classical and jazz pianist, the music director of the Purcell Mountain Orchestra, and an avid performer across B.C. and Alberta.

Violinist and violist Martine denBok, with a master's degree in violin performance, serves as principal second violinist with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and principal violist with the Symphony of the Kootenays. Residing in New Denver, she is also a dedicated educator and performer, notably with her acclaimed duo, Freya.

Cellist Jeff Faragher, based in Nelson, is known for his captivating performance style and diverse musical interests, spanning genres like Celtic, gypsy-jazz, and tango. He is the artistic director of the Symphony of the Kootenays and program director at Mountainside Chamber Music, bringing his dynamic artistry to stages across Western Canada.

This evening of exceptional musical artistry will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16 at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, 701 Ward Street. Tickets ($20 cash) are available at Otter Books in Nelson or at the door.
