During the regular Nelson City Council meeting on Sept. 27, two air cadets from 561 Nelson Osprey Squadron presented the council with a framed print showing an Air Cadet aircraft at Nelson Airport. This is part of the squadron’s celebration of its 70th year in Nelson.

The print named “Weather Briefing” is from Ontario artist Barry Franklin who does paintings of air cadet aircraft as a fundraiser for the Ontario Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League. The painting was partially inspired by Franklin landing in Nelson several years ago in his personal aircraft.

Mayor John Dooley received the print from Flight Sergeants Justice Ward and Natt McIntosh.

As part of the 70th anniversary, the squadron is hoping to get in contact with former members of the squadron. If you were a member of 561 as either a cadet, adult staff or a member of the Sponsoring Committee, please contact us at 561air@cadets.gc.ca. Let us know what you have done since you were in 561 and send us any pictures that you have in your time with 561.

The squadron always welcomes new cadets who are between the ages of 12 and 18. You can start your application at https://registration.cadets.gc.ca/get-started.html?unitId=175

The squadron meets every Wednesday evening at the Nelson Eagles Hall, 641 Baker St., from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. and does activities on selected weekends throughout the year.

Adults who would like to volunteer with squadron are also welcome.
