The City of Nelson is now accepting applications and nominations for its annual Heritage Award, honouring individuals, businesses or organizations who have made an outstanding contribution towards the preservation and/or promotion of Nelson’s heritage. The winner, who will receive an $1,000 honorarium, will be announced in December. Previous recipients include historian Greg Scott, retailer Cartolina, and the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce.

“Heritage is all around us!” says Astrid Heyerdahl, chair of the Heritage Working Group.

“The term heritage refers to the many stunning examples of heritage buildings throughout Nelson, the archeological sites, and archives and collections that sit within museums and people’s homes, however, we must also remember that heritage goes far beyond the physical. Cultural traditions, storytelling, craft-making, and knowledge passed from generation to generation — these are vital examples of our incorporeal heritage that make up the diversity and beauty of our area,”

“We are thrilled that the City of Nelson continues to celebrate the preservation of heritage in our community. We thank the City of Nelson for their efforts in recognizing individuals and organizations who make it their life’s work to bring diverse heritage and history to life for the betterment of all in our community.”

The city’s Heritage Working Group established this award to recognize and publicly appreciate individuals, groups, businesses, or other organizations who have demonstrated leadership in heritage restoration, renewal, or promotion, and to acknowledge the contribution heritage makes to the City of Nelson’s vitality, well-being, and identity.

Deadline for submissions is Oct. 30. Please contact Joy Barrett, the City of Nelson’s cultural development officer at cultural@nelson.ca for an application/nomination form.
