There’s a saying that goes something along the lines of: “Want to make God laugh? Make plans.” When I was younger, I used to think it was great — now I think it’s just plain wrong. Planning is important! If you agree, you should plan to attend a pair of library programs coming up later this month.

First off, we’ve got retirement coach Wendy Lacroix delivering a free presentation at the library on “10 Tips to a Successful Retirement” on March 16 at 7 p.m.

“As people are living well past the traditional retirement age,” says Lacroix. “In order to have a fulfilling, happy, and healthy retirement, they need to prepare.”

The presentation aims to help with that, offering tips for a successful retirement with time at the end for questions.

Lacroix has lived in Nelson for more than 30 years. She’s raised a family here and worked for many years as an employment counsellor and job coach before receiving her diploma in Professional Counselling and Certified Retirement Coaching.

Registration is required for this event, and space is limited. Email Heather at hgoldik@nelson.ca to register.

The second program is an online presentation on “Wills and Estates” by lawyer Troy Trillo, brought to you by the Kootenay Library Federation. It will take place on Tuesday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m.

His workshop will address a number of common questions, including: Do I need a will? Does having a blended family make a difference to my will? What is a power of attorney? Does a power of attorney cover health care matters? And more! There will also be time set aside after the talk for additional questions.

Trillo’s practice is focused primarily on wills and estates, corporate and commercial, and real estate law. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at UBC in 1999 with a Juris Doctor and is a partner in the law firm Connolly, Trillo & Yates.

To register for this free webinar email kootenaylibrariesprogramming@gmail.com.

Can’t make the sessions? Don’t worry, we’ve got lots of books and other resources for you at the library, including a comprehensive Explore Your Topic page on our website. We also offer free online courses through Gale Courses and LinkedIn Learning.

I don’t know about you, but from now on I’m sticking to a Benjamin Franklin proverb (aren’t they the best?): “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

Avi Silberstein is the Children’s Librarian at the Nelson Public Library. Check This Out runs every other week.
