The Nelson Public Library is delighted to kick off Earth Week with an author visit, when children’s author Cassandra Troughton offers a special story time on Saturday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. The event is perfect for children ages three-to-eight, and their adults.
Troughton's book, The Tree Spot, follows a young girl named Willow who finds peace in a magical sanctuary of trees just beyond her busy city. There, she nurtures the Earth and, in return, the Earth nurtures her. Through her friendship with a boy named Ari, Willow learns that sharing her special connection with nature can transform an entire community. The book is beautifully illustrated by Nadezhda Goretovskaia.
The story came about through personal experience when Troughton lost her own beloved tree spot to an industrial development. From that spark, she drew on her experience as an educator with Edmonton Public Schools to craft a story that speaks to children about the importance of the natural world.
"Nature has always been our greatest teacher," said Troughton, who now lives in Nelson. "Through Willow's story, children discover they can find their own magical connections with the natural world, nurturing empathy, belonging, and environmental stewardship along the way."
This special Earth Week story time offers kids a chance to hear the story, see the illustrations, and ask the author questions about her inspiration, how a book is created, and what they can do to embrace nature. Kids may even see themselves as published authors one day.
The author will have copies on hand for sale.
