Christmas on Baker is this Friday evening with a live nativity scene and music from 6 to 8 p.m.

The 14th annual Christmas on Baker will be back with a live nativity scene and music this Friday evening.

Actors will portray Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus in a manger, while musicians perform on stage.

“It’s a celebration of Christmas and to celebrate it with the local community,” said event organizer Jan Van Caeseele. She and her husband Paul are the key organizers this year with the support of volunteers through the Nelson Ministerial Association which holds the event every year.

Over 200 volunteers will assist with the set up, building the coral and a manger, while others will shepherd animals, perform in the live nativity and provide musical entertainment. The coral will hold two alpacas and four baby goats tended to by shepherds. There will be a food tent serving hot chocolate, cookies and apple cider thanks to ministerial donations.

There will be singing and musical performances by Kelle Wardle, the Nelson Covenant Church youth group, the Nelson Christian Community School, St. Josephs Catholic School, the Kootenay Christian Fellowship band and the Barber Shop Quartet.

Everyone is welcome to join in this annual event on December 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the 600 block of Baker Street.
