Disability employment awareness month: open house and inclusive employer award

Events take place in Nelson and Castlegar this week

The Nelson and Castlegar WorkBC centres will be holding open houses and award presentations to celebrate those living with disabilities in the two communities, and the employers who support their success.

The Nelson event will take place on Sept. 18. The Castlegar event, which will include a barbecue, will be on Sept. 17.

Both events will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“For many years I’ve been lucky enough to work with clients with disabilities, and to connect them with employers in our area,” says Jen Barclay of the Castlegar WorkBC Centre.

“Not only have I seen the difference employment makes in their lives – a job gets them out of the house, it creates such valuable social interaction and self esteem, and it increases that feeling of being a part of the community they live in – but I’ve seen the wonderful work ethic and commitment they bring to their jobs.”

The Nelson and Castlegar WorkBC Centres will be present their Inclusive Employer Award to a Nelson and a Castlegar area employer who has shown an ongoing commitment to hiring and supporting people with disabilities. The presentations will occur at 12:30 pm.

The centres invite the public to drop by, meet the staff, have a bite to eat, discover the centres’ services, and celebrate the inclusive employers of 2019.

The Nelson WorkBC Centre is located at Suite 203 – 514 Vernon St. The Castlegar centre is located at 1016 4th St.
