A group marched down Nelson’s Baker Street at noon today as part of Shut Down Canada.

The group is demanding an independent inquiry with the 2000 plus cases of missing or murdered indigenous women in Canada.

In a written statement from Shut Down Canada organizers, the aim of the march was to bring national attention to the ways in which “the system has failed not just indigenous women and the Sinixt people but all common Canadians”.

Chanting “Hey, hey, hoe, hoe, Harper must go,” a group of about twenty people held placards as they walked down Baker Street, also calling to attention that this land is the traditional territory of the Sinixt First Nation. The group paused at the intersection of Ward and Baker, stopping traffic for a brief time before continuing onward.
