NatureKids BC, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a love and stewardship for nature for B.C. children and their families, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a tree planting event in Nelson on Oct. 23.

A small group of NatureKids supporters, members and friends gathered together (with physical distancing in mind) in the forest near Cottonwood Lake and braved the snow to plant almost 100 native trees as part of the celebration.

“It was the first real snowfall of the season, but it definitely didn’t dampen the spirit of our members,” said NatureKids BC volunteer leader Jenni Stol. “The children loved playing in the snow and we even had a great fire outside together to celebrate.”

PRT generously provided the seedlings for the event. Staff from Interfor led the planting efforts while teaching the kids about reforestation, and donated refreshments to keep everyone warm.

The Nelson NatureKids club offers nature connection events year round for local families. New members are always welcome.
