Classical guitarist John Searles will play traditional pieces and new works in Nelson on May 23.

The classical guitar has taken Josh Searles throughout Spain, the UK, the USA, and many parts of Canada and on May 23 it will bring him to Nelson. The guitarist will be performing at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church in the Nelson Guitarworks series with a program that features many of the most loved works in the guitar repertoire.

Of traditional pieces like those by Heitor Villa Lobos and Francisco Tárrega, Searles says “These pieces resonate deeply with me… some of them inspired me to pick up guitar when I was young, so it is a thrill to perform them.”

Searles will also be playing contemporary works including the music of Dale Kavanagh and Andrew York. “I like my programs to have personality, be exciting, and have contrast,” he says.

Searles has a fascinating career with a background as a multi-instrumentalist and a producer/DJ of electronic music. Based in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, Searles is looking forward to visiting Nelson.

“I have touched down in Nelson in a different guises in the past, and know that it has a very vibrant and artistic community. I'm really excited to have my guitar with me this time and to share a very personal side of my musical journey with the community.”

Searles is a dedicated educator and while in Nelson he’ll be giving a class for guitarists called From Practice to Performance, with practical tips on preparing for time on stage. The workshop will take place at Nelson United Church, May 24, 10 a.m.-noon ($40, register at info@emma-rush.com).

Tickets for the Josh Searles concert are $25 and are available at Eddy Music on Baker Street or at the door. More information or reservations at 905 807 4792.
