Beatboxer David Lane will lead a workshop in Nelson on April 26.

From Humming to Mouth Drumming is an interactive hybrid performance/workshop of vocal experimentation led by Juno-nominated vocalist David Lane.

The workshop will include vocal exercises, rhythm games, and beatboxing. Participants will be encouraged to express their individuality by using their voices to create a wide array of silly and fun sounds. The performance will include demonstration, improvisation, call and response, and interactivity. Participants will experiment making sounds with their mouth on their own, and may even be called up on stage to share with the group within their own comfort level.

The workshop culminates in participants working together to apply the beatboxing basics they learned to a song of their choosing, and performing for the class in small groups. Participants should expect to be laughing a lot as they make sounds they’ve never made before!

Suggested age of 12 and up (adults are more than welcome!). Participants younger than 12 are free and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Formerly of the Juno-nominated vocal quartet Cadence, Lane has been singing and beatboxing for two decades, and has always enjoyed exploring the limits of the human voice. He holds degrees in music performance and music education, and is a dynamic and engaging educator with 500-plus educational workshops under his belt. He currently sings with the New York City-based group Duwendé (Doo-when-day).

He has performed in more than 20 countries, appeared on America’s Got Talent, toured with Grammy award-winning artists, opened for Jay Leno, and his two groups have garnered more than 11 million views on YouTube.

The workshop runs April 26 at Nelson United Church. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and $30 for families. To register visit www.echovocalarts.ca/workshops.
