Join writer Angie Abdou on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Oxygen Art Centre (3-320 Vernon Street) for an evening of discussion on her latest book, Home Ice: Reflections of a Reluctant Hockey Mom.

In what promises to be a lively discussion about parenting, hockey, the ethics of memoir and more, Abdou will be interviewed by Nelson authors (and parents) Deryn Collier and Roz Nay. Entry to the event is free, but a donation of $5 at the door is encouraged and will go to Oxygen Art Centre for the use of the space. Books will be available for purchase from Otter Books. Oxygen Art Centre is located in the back alley behind Hipperson Hardware.

In Home Ice, Abdou combines revealing personal stories with careful research on issues such as cost, gender bias, concussions, and family pressures to offer a thoughtful look at the struggles, joys, and strains of having a child in amateur hockey. Praised by Booklist in a starred review as “a first-rate memoir” and “a must-read for parents with youngsters who play organized sports,” Home Ice offers a compellingly honest insider’s view of what it is like to parent today’s young athlete in a competitive, high-pressure culture.

Angie Abdou is the author of five novels, including, most recently, In Case I Go, a finalist in the fiction category of the Banff Mountain Book Competition, also named a best book of 2017 by CBC Books and Rogers Writers’ Trust. The Bone Cage was a CBC Canada Reads finalist, defended by NHL star Georges Laraque, and was awarded the 2011/12 MacEwan Book of the Year shortly after. Angie is an associate professor of creative writing at Athabasca University.

Deryn Collier is the author of the Bern Fortin novels. Originally from Montreal, she now lives in Nelson, British Columbia, with her husband, sons, and cats.

Roz Nay is the author of Our Little Secret. Having grown up in England, she now lives in British Columbia with her husband and two children.
