Kootenay Kids Society is a non-profit, multi-service, community based agency. It provide services and support for families with young children and our vision is to set the standard for excellence in the care and healthy development of children in the Nelson area.

Kootenay Kids Society offers programs and supports from Family Place at 312 Silica Street, Kootenay Kids Early Care and Learning Centre at 1007 Cottonwood Street and more recently at the Yellow House at 804 Stanley Street.

We would like to invite everyone to our open house at the Yellow House on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. We have lots of fun activities planned including a visit from the Nelson Fire Department with a big shiny fire truck, tours of the Yellow House, yummy snacks, and the opportunity to win a door prize by making a small donation to enter the draw.

Kootenay Kids Society will be launching a fundraiser on September 27 to help us add a fire escape to the Yellow House which will allow us to fully utilize every corner of this beautiful heritage home. Organizers hope that you can take the time to read the following Kootenay Kids Fairytale and find it in your heart and budget to make a tax deductible donation to Kootenay Kids Society to help us to continue to make a difference in the lives of local families.

A Kootenay Fairy Tale

Once upon a time there was a warm and welcoming house that opened its doors to all the wonderful families of Nelson and it’s surrounding lands. Inside this beautiful house were lots of friendly and caring people who wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and their parents. Families were happy to be part of this supportive community. Parents appreciated the knowledge and support they gained from every visit.  Everyone enjoyed the healthy snacks provided, especially the children who, like most children, were almost always a little bit hungry.

This happy place came to be known as Kootenay Kids Society and the warm and welcoming house, family place. Over the years more and more families came from far and wide and soon the needs had doubled.

The caring people of Kootenay Kids Society went to the governments and other funders to request more money to support all the families but were told the  money was all spent. The society was very worried because they could not continue to meet the increased demand and costs without making some difficult decisions. Could they even consider cutting some of their support  programs or to stop providing the healthy snacks that the children loved and needed?

The caring people of Kootenay Kids Society knew what they had to do. They had to ask the generous citizens for their help and support. The society needed to convince the wonderful people that even the smallest donation would make a huge difference and allow their staff to continue to meet the needs of the families that had come to rely on family place for support and food.
