The Kootenay Pride Society is calling for submissions for Out of the Closet And Into the Koots, a queer zine to launch for September’s Pride weekend.

Organized by volunteer Gabor Lovas, the project will publish submissions for local Kootenay LGBTQIA+ residents.

The zine aims to build an archive of queer experience in the region, and to tackle the isolation some in the community experience by helping orient them to local resources.

“It is vital to build and preserve our local queer experiences as historically our stories and achievements are erased,” says Lovas.

The zine is accepting submissions from the public that address the following central topics:

• How to find and build ‘qmunity’ in the Kootenays;

• What I wish I had known about being ‘out’ in this region;

• What I wish the community at large knew about being queer in the Kootenays; and

• Testimonials about helpful local resources.

These topics are preferred, but all submissions will be considered.

The project was inspired by Lovas’ own experience of moving to Nelson three years ago.

“Every single Queer person I have spoken to in this area has shared how hard it is to find and meet up with other LGTBQIA+ people. That has been my experience as well. I am making the zine as way to counter that by bringing our stories and knowledge together.”

All content submitted will be considered regardless of topic. Submissions should be 150 words maximum and emailed to somethingofthatkind@gmail.com before Aug.13th.

The Kootenay Pride Society is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization founded in 1995.
