Sixteen fifth-year cadets from Sea, Army and Air units in the Kootenay region came together for a weekend of training workshops, designed to enhance their leadership and instructional skills.

Interactive classes allowed for small group activities, problem-solving and sharing ideas with their peers. When asked what these young people could offer to their home unit, some of the responses were – compassion in teaching younger cadets, leadership, respect, and to set a good example.

In advance of this weekend, all of the senior cadets were given an opportunity to select the workshops that they were most interested in. They chose communication, supervision, ethics and stress management. The training these cadets receive has a lot of value, not just for the cadet, but for the unit as well. Officers teach the senior cadets, who in turn, teach the junior cadets. As the junior cadets move up through their levels, they begin to learn how to teach the newer cadets.

“This is very important leadership training, not only to be better leaders in the cadet program but for life in general”, Captain G. Remple, 581 Castlegar Squadron.

The aim of the National Cadet program is to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Canadian youth aged 12 to 18 are encouraged to learn more about the cadet programs in their community.

Though the program is military based, there is no obligation to for a cadet to join the forces. Cadet Leaders nurture a strong self-image under their command through positive reinforcement of core values, opportunities to the community and positive relationship building.
