On Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, Nelson Lions volunteers will roam through Nelson picking up your Christmas trees.

Please have your trees out and visible on your front curb (not back laneways please!) before 9 a.m. or our scouting crew might miss you. We request a donation of $5 to $10 per tree, in cash or cheques to Nelson Lions Club. Leave the payment attached in a ziplock bag, in your mailbox, or at your door, or contact us via our website to send an eTransfer beforehand.

All money raised remains within our community — actually, so do the trees. Money and mulch, redistributed locally as always.

Last month we redistributed $10,000 from recent fundraisers to local charities and associations through our annual Community Grants program. Applications (available from our website) are judged by a committee of club members with an emphasis on the local projects that provide the most service to the greatest number of people.

Over the years, we are proud to have dispersed over $120,000. Recipients this year include KERPA, Nelson Cares, Cicada Place, Nelson and District Seniors Coordinating Society, Nelson Civic Theatre Society, Nelson Electric Tramway Society, NCS Street Outreach, Capitol Theatre, Stroke Recovery BC, Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and the Nelson Athletic Society.

These were just some of the incredible applications we received this year, and your contributions to our fundraisers like this weekend’s Christmas tree pickup will help us provide even more assistance next year.
