The original 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation by Julia Ward Howe will be featured at the second annual Nelson Mother’s Day Rally for Peace, taking place on Sunday, May 13th at the Rotary Shelter at Lakeside Park, 1-3 pm.

The rally is sponsored by KAIROS, an interfaith group that works for peace, human rights and justice in Canada and throughout the world.

“Mother’s Day began as a as a holiday that commemorated women’s public activism, and we want to honour that,” says Sandra Hartline, local KAIROS representative. “Many middle-class women in the 19th century believed that they bore a special responsibility as actual or potential mothers to care for the casualties of society.

“In the following decades, they battled for improved working conditions for women and protection for children, public health services and benefits for the poor. For many activists, there is a connection between motherhood and the struggle for social and economic justice for all.”

Hannah Hadikin of the Voice of Women for Peace Canada, and Madelyn Mackay, who attended the recent United Nations Status of Women conference in New York, will be speakers.

Everyone is invited to this Mother’s Day celebratory event and asked to bring food to share. Entertainment will be provided by the Ukuladies, Toinya and Netta Fominoff, and Joy
