Nelson author Kate Armstrong’s debut book has been recognized for its contribution to women’s history in Ontario.
The Ontario Historical Society announced Wednesday that Armstrong’s book, The Stone Frigate: The Royal Military College’s First Female Cadet Speaks Out, has won the 2019 Alison Prentice Award.
The honour goes to what the society says is the best book in Ontario women’s history published in the last three years.
“The Stone Frigate is most deserving of the Alison Prentice Award for its vivid, engaged writing that places the reader in the author’s boots and its documentation of a critical chapter of women’s history,” said the society in a statement.
Armstrong’s memoir of the prejudice faced by the Royal Military College’s first female students in 1980 has already garnered her a nomination earlier this year for the Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize.
