Nelson loves traditions, especially when it comes to the arts. There’s Art Walk, the Capitol Theatre’s Panto and Summer Youth Theatre musicals. And we at Nelson History Theatre have a summer theatre program of our own that’s been going for 20 years.

For many years now there has also been the annual reading of Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol, a fundraiser for The Nelson Community Food Centre.

The pandemic has caused the panto to be cancelled and, alas, also the Dickens, which gave Nelson History Theatre director Richard Rowberry an idea.

“I’ve always had a hankering to do something different,” he said, “but tradition has always gotten in the way. Not this year! I called up Andrew Creighton at the Nelson Community Food Centre and he was naturally happy to hear what we had in mind.”

A collection of holiday stories and a couple songs as well are now featured at kootenayhistory.com featuring Niko Bell, Sydney Black, Geoff Burns, Lindsay Clague, Brian d’Eon, Pat Henman, Kozmo Sammartino, Bessie Wapp, and Gillian Wiley.

Take in some local holiday cheer and leave a donation as well for the food centre at https://nelsoncfc.ca/make-a-gift/.

Thank you and happy holidays!
