Tomorrow night, the people of Nelson are invited to join millions across the world in switching off their lights for an hour.

Earth Hour, now in its seventh year, is scheduled for Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time.

Nelson Hydro is asking people at home, work and play to turn off non-essential lights during this time. They’re asking people to pledge and “use your power to make change a reality.”

“The City of Nelson and Nelson Hydro want residents and customers to think about, and then reduce, their energy consumption for Earth Hour and every hour.”

Visit http://www.earthhournelson.ca/ and commit to reducing energy consumption. One lucky winner will be randomly selected to choose a local (within Nelson Hydro’s service area) registered, non-profit society or charity of their choice to receive $1,000 from Nelson Hydro.

Earth Hour began as a lights out event organized by the WWF in Sydney. Australia and has since grown to involved more than 7,00 communities around the world. As a catalyst for greater awareness, it is hoped that turning out the lights for one hour will get people thinking of ways to save energy in their every day lives.
