Nelson Italian-Canadian Society cooking up annual spaghetti sauce fundraiser

Sale runs until Saturday

Submitted by the Nelson-Italian Canadian Society

Nelsonites have experienced the first taste of winter for 2022. For many, the cold weather comes with the desire for comfort foods.

One of their all-time favourite comfort foods is pasta served up with a fantastic homemade sauce.

Once again this winter, the Nelson Italian-Canadian Society (NICS) is back in the kitchen preparing for its annual winter fundraiser featuring two types of traditional homemade spaghetti sauce – traditional meat-based sauce and vegetarian sauce.

The homemade sauce will be made from an authentic Italian recipe that uses crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, onions, garlic, olive oil, wine, salt, pepper, and fresh and dried herbs.

The spaghetti sauce will be sold in one-litre plastic containers for $12.50 each. All proceeds go to support charitable initiatives in Nelson.

No preservatives, no gluten, no dairy. Just really good comfort food to help warm your body and soul on a cold winter day.

As the holiday season approaches so is the appetite for seasonal baked goods.

A seasonal favourite for Italians is pizzelle cookies, the traditional waffle cookies made from flour, eggs, sugar, and butter and flavoured with anise or chocolate.

Last year the NICS had a huge success selling pizzelle for its winter fundraiser and is doing it again this year. They come wrapped in festive cellophane packaging and cost $10 for a dozen.

Three options are available: 12 anise flavoured or 12 chocolate flavoured, or a package of six anise and six chocolate-flavoured cookies.

Pre-orders for both types of spaghetti sauce and pizzelle cookies are limited. The sale runs until Nov. 26.

For those who do not have access to a computer but would still like to place a cash or cheque order, please call Paul Boscariol at 250-505-6482.

The pick-up date is Dec. 2 from 2-6 p.m. and Dec. 3 from 9-11 a.m. at the Nelson and District Rod and Gun Club.
