The Nelson Lions Club is here to serve. Luckily we’re not alone. This year we were able to donate $8,100 to local charitable societies and community groups, each one working in their own way to make our community better for us all.

This year’s recipients include ANKORS; the West Kootenay Women’s Association; the Nelson Community Food Centre; the Nelson and District Museum, Archives, Art Gallery and Historical Society; the Capitol Theatre Restoration Society; the Nelson Electric Tramway Society; and the Kootenay Emergency Response Physicians Association.

We give thanks to all of you in our community who supported the Nelson Lions Club in this past year. With your support, our Fall Firewood Sale, Christmas Tree Pickup, Nelson Lions Calendar and Oso Negro Coffee fundraisers were all a huge success.

Each year we redistribute these fundraising efforts through our Community Grants and other programs. Over the years, we are proud to have dispersed over $100,000 to many incredible local projects. Funding preference is typically given to those projects that will provide the most service to the greatest number of people in our membership area. Application for this program is open to any local qualified organization: charities, amateur athletic associations, etc. Future applicants can find more details at nelsonlions.ca/grants.

Our club members volunteer to create and run local fundraising events, which provide service to our community while raising funds that we then redistribute to help other community groups with their own projects. It’s a win-win!

As well as the Community Grants program, our fundraising efforts provide bursaries for local students, support for the elderly through sight and hearing programs, and contribute to larger Lions International projects throughout the world.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients for their great work and service.
