Applications are now being accepted for the Nelson Lions Club’s annual community grants program. If you are a qualified donee as defined by the Canada Revenue Agency, you can apply to the club for funds to help support your local efforts.

This is the 14th year the club has been able to fund this program from an investment in the local Osprey Community Foundation. Last year the club donated over $8,000 to local charitable societies and community groups – each one working in their own way to make our community better for us all.

Applications are accepted from the Nelson Lions Club’s membership area, which is approximately defined as the City of Nelson, North Shore, Harrop, Procter, Balfour, Taghum, Blewett and Beasley. Funding preference is typically given to those projects that will provide the most service to the greatest number of people in our membership area.

Throughout the year, the Nelson Lions Club hosts a number of fundraisers, including their July 1 pancake breakfast, Christmas tree pickup, equipment rentals, and most recently, their annual firewood sale that raised over $6,000. Thanks to Kalesnikoff for donating a load of logs, Taghum Shell for donating the fuel, and A&W for donating coupons for volunteers, the club was once again able to operate the event with very little cost. Micah’s Plumbing crew, McLaren’s Bobcats, 20 club members and 10 volunteers contributed time and muscle to cut, split and sell the wood — this year in record time!

Funds from events such as these are redistributed back to our community through student scholarships, health and wellness initiatives, and the community grants program.

Over the years, the Nelson Lions have dispersed over $100,000 to many local projects. This year the club hopes to provide up to $10,000 to selected applicants.

Application for this program is open now until Nov. 15 to any local qualified organization: charities, amateur athletic associations, etc. Applicants can find more details at nelsonlions.ca/grants.
