The Nelson Lions' annual firewood sale is Nov. 2.

The Nelson Lions Club invite you to our annual Firewood Sale Fundraiser, across from Blewett School on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 8 a.m.

As always, the wood is split and ready for burning this year. Please plan to load your own vehicle. We ask for a minimum donation of $325/cord and you’ll pay only for as much wood as you can carry. We start selling at 8 a.m. on a first-come first-serve basis and usually run out by 11 a.m.

We now accept credit and debt cards, so it’s easier than ever to add an additional donation to your payment should you wish to.

Like so many events in our community, this fundraiser wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of so many in our community.  Alon Gelcer, a local male- and couples-relationship councillor, is donating both his time and his excavator. Western Auto is helping us move said excavator, and the Nelson Leafs, Sea Cadets, SD Trucking, David Havemann, our club members and many others are donating their time and equipment for bucking, splitting and selling.

If you’re free Oct. 26-29 and wish to help us cut or split, please reach out via Facebook or our website — many hands make light work!

Kalesnikoff Lumber has donated the truck-load of lumber to us for the past 14 years, and in recognition of their ongoing support, we recently awarded them with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Another was awarded to Jesse and Lana McLaren, who among other generosities saved us time and lower backs by supplying excavators for the past few years.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship Program was established in 1973 in honour of Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International (LCI). LCI recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations by bestowing on them this Fellowship Award, our highest form of recognition, for their contributions that embody humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism.

Our community has helped the Nelson Lions Club raise and distribute more than $100,000 back to local societies and organizations, students and seniors, from this fundraiser alone. As volunteers, Lions is a great opportunity to do things we don’t do in our regular lives. How many people can say they’ve cut, split and sold an entire truckload of wood, and then given the money away?

Speaking of giving money away, from now until Dec. 1 we are accepting applications for our 2024 Community Grants Program. If you are a qualified donee, as defined by the CRA, and based within our club’s membership area, you can apply to the club for funds to help support your local efforts.

Visit us on Facebook or nelsonlions.ca for additional information, to apply for community grants, or to join the club and help us serve your community. We are an inclusive club, meeting for two hours on the first Tuesday of each month — come as a guest and see what we are all about!
