Nelson poet nominated for national prize

Eimear Laffan is one of six Writers’ Trust of Canada nominations

The Nelson poet Eimear Laffan has been nominated by the Writers’ Trust of Canada for the annual Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers.

Two $10,000 prizes will be given for works of unpublished poetry and short fiction. Laffan is one of six nominees. She was nominated for her prose poem entitled My Life, Delimited.

“It’s not a memoir,” Laffan told the Nelson Star. “The title could be misleading.”

In their citation on the Writers’ Trust website the members of the jury said, “On a mission to re-imagine the autobiographical lyric, Eimear Laffan sets loose a roving intelligence across continents and canons. Quick-witted and attentive, deconstructive and delightful, Laffan’s caesura-studded prose poems take nothing for granted.”

My Life, Delimited consists of many strands, each one quickly abandoned and then picked up later multiple times, in a piece that is about many things at once.

“I have not written like this before,” Laffan says. “For me, this is very busy, deliberately, almost like it’s trying to be excessive, very expansive. The impulse is different than the impulse to write a haiku … I want this to be out of control.”

The many strands that appear and reappear include “places I’ve been, people, books I’ve read, films, all the things that define us.”

Laffan grew up in a small village in rural Ireland, studied for a psychology degree in Galway, and worked for technology companies in Dublin. She taught English in Korea, spent extended periods of time in India, and spent a year in Wales where she earned a Master’s degree in international relations. She moved to Nelson in 2007.
