A new and little-known cooperative social movement in Syria is the subject of a presentation in Nelson on Oct. 18.
Inspiring developments are taking place in Rojava, a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria, whose inhabitants have created a place of security, gender equality, economic co-operation, and a unique direct democracy that has no equivalent elsewhere.
John Restakis traveled to Syria last November and will be in Nelson to present The Rojava Revolution: Co-operation, Environmentalism, and Feminism in North Syria.
Restakis is the executive director of the Community Evolution Foundation and the past executive director of the BC Co-operative Association. He is the author of Humanizing the Economy — Co-operatives in the Age of Capital.
The event is hosted by the Upper Columbia Co-op Council to mark Co-op Week, a national celebration of the impact co-ops and credit unions have on our local communities and around the world.
Admission is free and the event starts at 6:00 p.m. at the WKTEP building at 266 Baker St. Donations to the food bank will be collected.
