Flaman Fitness – Nelson is pleased to announce that the Nelson and District Women’s Centre is the recipient of a $3,500 donation from the Flaman Foundation.
The mandate of the Flaman Foundation is to provide basic necessities of life for children and families in need, locally and around the world. Flaman Fitness – Nelson has strong female leadership in owner Colleen Hellman, whose two daughters are often seen helping around their storefront located at Six Mile just outside of Nelson.
Colleen and her daughters often would donate gently used clothing to the Women’s Centre, and it’s a great honour to be able to give their financial support through the Flaman Foundation.
The Nelson and District Women’s Centre is the oldest rural women’s centre in Canada, with the drop-in resource and referral program exclusively open to women and children since 1973.
The drop-in program provides a safe space for women to receive several critical services including free access to food, clothing, and personal hygiene supplies; peer counselling and referral to other community resources; educational and skill-building opportunities; empowerment; access to feminist literature; internet access and computers services.
All these services address issues of poverty, isolation, discrimination and violence that women continue to face in our community and have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
Drop-in hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will re-open after a holiday closure on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022.
