Volunteers and community partners with the Nelson Police Department Restorative Justice have been honoured thanks to a $1500 grant from the Nelson & District Credit Union’s Community Investment Program.

A press release said the the money was used to honor the hard work and dedication of the 23 volunteers and to acknowledge community partners who support the program.

“We are grateful for the many ways this community shows its support. Public engagement in community dialogue designed to address crime is a critical link to the success that NPDRJ has found over the past 3.5 years,” said the release.

Since the program was launched in 2014 NPDRJ volunteers have worked to empower victims and other stakeholders to play a vital role in “generating understanding of the impacts of criminal behavior and to deciding outcomes designed to reasonably address the harm.”

The release continues, “Volunteers have also supported offenders to take responsibility for their actions and to be accountable to those that were harmed. “
