PHOTOS: Locals and tourists pack downtown for MarketFest and ArtWalk

Hundreds of people braved the heat with vendors, bands, and acrobats

With MarketFest and the summer’s second opening of ArtWalk happening on the same evening, Downtown Nelson was buzzing and crowded on Friday.

ArtWalk featured work by over 60 artists in 27 venues. The work will remain hanging in the various businesses until Sept. 4.

Organizer Stephanie Myers said she heard lots of discussion about the importance of getting art into places you don’t usually find it.”

“Artwalk is the democratization of art appreciation,” she said. “Art is for everyone.”

Many of the ArtWalk venues are located downtown, so an all-age mix of locals and tourists attended both, packing the three blocks of downtown Baker Street along with vendors, bands, and acrobats. Overheard was the speculation that it was biggest MarketFest crowd ever.
