Hundreds of students walked in downtown Nelson on Friday

Hundreds of students at Nelson's Trafalgar Middle School paraded downtown Friday to show their support ahead of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The event began with opening remarks by Sinixt hunter Rick Desautel, Indigenous drumming songs and a traditional dance by First Nations students. The school then walked to The Capitol Theatre for another performance before completing their route along Baker Street.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is meant to remember and honour Indigenous children who died in Canada's residential school system as well as survivors, is Monday, Sept. 30.
